Things can change rapidly when it comes to seo on your site. The search engine algorithms are always working to improve to deliver the best user experience. What used to be the best link building techniques, such as building backlinks, simply do not carry the power they used to.
Google is now all about relevancy and natural progression aka natural backlinks. What worked a few years ago is no longer effective!
What’s a natural backlink? Simple. It’s one you don’t manufacture or manipulate!
Back when I first started teaching affiliate marketing at Pajama Affiliates, backlinking was a big part of our courses. Now, you won’t find it even mentioned in a single course. Not once. It’s that big of a deal.
The Good Old Days Before the Panda and Penguin!
I remember the days when I would write a post, then head to a handful of other article directories, write on that topic again and link to my current post using similar keywords as anchor text for the linking. These article directories were ranking on the first pages of Google and back then, and were a powerful ranking signal.
Then the Panda and Penguin updates were released. These sites such as Ezine and other SEO giants plummeted overnight. These sites were pushed down in Google so the chances of a backlink from such a site became pretty obsolete.
If you are still using those article directories, stop. There are better ways that are natural and Google loves.
I am not the only one that has this view on Backlinks. You can read this article, Contrarian View On Backlinks that I found through Kyle from Wealthy Affiliate.
But What About Blog Commenting?
If you are commenting on blogs just to get a backlink, it’s not natural. You need to have natural backlinks. Remember above when I said the updates that the search engines make are about relevancy and natural progression? Blog commenting is not one of the best link building techniques available to you.
If another site decides to link to you, that’s great. Let’s just hope that site has some authority and a good seo structure. If not, it’s really not worth much.
If you however are just commenting on random sites for the purpose of a backlink, you could be using your time far more wisely on much more effective seo link building strategies.
If building backlinks is a big part of your link building strategy, STOP!
2 Best Link Building Techniques!
There are two top link building strategies. These are not new link building techniques, yet many bloggers overlook them.
#1 Social Media Is a Powerful Backlink
Here is the bottom line when it comes to social media and really a big part of blogging. If you write good, compelling, visually appealing content, people will share via various social media platforms. Naturally.
Social proof is huge in any market. If people are sharing your stuff. you build some seriously powerful backlinks. It lets the search engines know that others who like the same things are looking at your site. This causes the search engines to take note and your rankings rise. Social media is one of the best link building techniques you can use.
You can’t just write a bland blog post, with a dull title, that is painful on the eyes and expect it to get shares. Have you ever started reading a blog post with little paragraph breaks, long paragraphs and no visual appeal and clicked right off? These posts will not get many shares.
They are exhausting to even read.
Knowing how to write a blog post that gets shares is about creating good relevant content that is visually appealing and easy to share. Make sure you have share buttons on your site to make it simple for your reader.
#2 Internal Linking for Strong Onsite SEO
I think this is the most overlooked link building strategy ever. I visit blog after blog and rarely see any internal linking to other relevant posts or pages on that person’s site. Worse, there is nothing relevant on their site to even link to!
Building natural links that makes sense works like a charm.
A site that is creating and interlinking relevant content together creates a beautiful web for the spiders to crawl. A site that does this can outrank others that don’t (and most don’t) by leaps and bounds when done as a consistent practice.
If you follow any links on this page, you will see that they rank to relevant content and that the anchor text I use to link to these other pages in this site tell the story of what they are about to link too. We teach this powerful linking technique in great detail in our keyword research and seo tutorial.
Internal linking is like creating backlinks within your own site. Backlinks that help your user navigate. The search engines are all about the end user experience and if your linking strategies aren’t focused on the user, you have lost the game!
