You probably know or have heard of bloggers that are making a lot of money with their blogs.
You maybe wonder is it real, can it happen for you. The biggest question asked is how long does it take to make money by blogging?
Please note here that I am talking about making money blogging via affiliate marketing and not sponsored posts.
Affiliate marketing is residual income whereas sponsored posts are trading time for money, they’re okay for some money, but to really be successful at this you need to diversify your income and get that residual income rolling in from affiliate marketing.
First off, blogging is like any other business.
Not many start a new business and go from in the red to in the black before 2 to 5 years.
But red to black aside, how long before you start seeing sales coming in?
In my honest opinion and from my experience, bloggers should see some sales, even if it’s just a handful by the six month mark.
Those that don’t usually have:
- failed to target a buyers audience or a specific audience
- go way too broad and many of the topics on their blog aren’t relevant to one another
- do not know how to write to convert sales.
- used weak calls to action.
- been focused on followers and not conversions.
- been listening too many people not making a lot of money themselves.
Keywords alone won’t help you if you have limited knowledge on SEO or what your targeting audience wants.
If you are new to reading this, it may be your lucky day. You can start out with some information that may set you on the right path to getting it right and building a strong sustainable business blogging for money.
Been Blogging for Years with Little Money to Show?
If you have found this post and have been blogging for a while without making any or little money, you may need to open your mind that the only way to turn this around is to open your mind to change.
I have been doing this a while now and have found that it’s the older “more experienced” bloggers are the ones that are often the toughest to get onto the money making path.
They resist change and it’s costing them money and years of their life.
It’s human nature and I get it.
Change isn’t easy.
I don’t need to remind you of the saying about keep doing what you are doing and you will keep getting what you are getting.
- I understand that you have been blogging for years on topics all over the place and narrowing down your focus is not easy.
- I understand that it has been drilled in your head that you need to get more followers, but followers are not buyers!
- I understand it’s easier to just go back into the groups with the other old bloggers who aren’t making money because you are comfortable there.
- I understand that really buckling down and learning new things like how SEO really works seems overwhelming.
- I Understand You Could be in Denial!
How Long Does it Take to Make Money by Blogging?
Not near as long if you grasp the following …
1. Forget about Getting Followers to Blog!
Yes seriously, forget it.
Followers aren’t buyers.
This is not 2009 when all the rage was getting followers.
If followers are what you seek, you are treating this more as a hobby than a business and your perspective needs to shift.
Lot’s of followers only bring in money on a handful of very targeted blogs.
Don’t even get me started on signing up for a newsletter on a broad site like this. It doesn’t even make sense.
I see so many buying into the concept of you follow me, I will follow you.
This is not marketing, this is more like a popularity contest.
It will not bring you sales.
It may bring you traffic, but traffic isn’t worth much if it’s not converting and this kind of traffic is doing you no favors.
Lots of followers are not what works now.
Followers are only buyers in a small number of niches. A very small number.
2. Target a Buyers Audience to Make Money with a Blog
This means actually knowing who your audience is.
If you write a post on gardening and I land on your blog and then there are other posts on things like fashion, cooking, home decor, you have failed me.
If I am looking for gardening, I am probably not interested in the rest.
I could be a man and the rest of your blog is things that are no interest to me whatsoever.
To target a buyers audience, you need to understand your reader and where in the buyer process they are.
Are you writing for those in the research stage or are you writing for those who have their wallets out and are ready to make a purchase?
Do you even know the difference?
Do you know the sweet spot in the middle?
3. Narrow Your Focus to Make More Money By Blogging!
This means find a niche and stick to it.
Don’t have a zillion different topics on your blog.
If I am into gardening and I land on your blog, turn your blog into a paradise for gardening.
Go more narrow if you can, like vegetable gardening, even better, “vegetable gardening in small spaces.”
Not only will your site had more power to rank in the search engines like this, (Google loves loves relevancy) but people will actually land and stay and buy from your blog.
They will trust you because you are an authority in this niche.
I can’t stress the importance of this enough.
4. Write a Blog Post that Converts Sales
A blog post needs to be visually appealing, and easy to read.
It needs to deliver on what the reader is searching for.
It needs to have clear calls to action.
It needs to have affiliate products relevant to the topic and products that will actually convert.
There’s a lot more to making sales than just throwing a bunch of links up – trust me!
There’s an art to writing a blog post that actually converts sales.
It would behoove you to learn.
5. Learn and Implement On Page and On Site SEO!
On page SEO is pretty easy or so most think.
They find a good keyword and do all of the things that you can possible do on the post to rank.
Many do this and actually rank yet still don’t make a lot of money because not all keywords are buyer keywords.
Some choose keywords that may look good in a keyword tool but don’t research it any further than this. Some don’t research their keywords or even use a keyword tool.
If you have mastered the on page seo, but haven’t managed to optimize your site as a whole you are leaving money all over the table.
You wonder how long it takes to make money blogging, yet you haven’t went deep enough or looked at the bigger picture.
A strong, targeted, optimized site’s post will consistently rank higher over and over again whereas a site that is not, will struggle to compete.
So How Long Does it Take to Make Money by Blogging Really?
That is really up to you.
It’s about writing good relevant, compelling content that people are actually searching for.
It’s about knowing, targeting and delivering to your audience.
It’s a bit about technique.
A blogger that takes the time to educate themselves will get there a lot faster.
My first site I was fully supporting myself in less 18 months.
My partner Lesley is killing it here with well over six figures on her year number four with one highly focused blog alone.
She made over $11,000 in her 9th month of pregnancy on Amazon alone.
If you have been blogging for a long time and not making the money you had hoped, get some help and stop trying to figure it out on your own.
Follow those that are making money and get away from those that don’t.
Stop buying into the concepts that only give you short term results such as link swapping or free giveaways where people only sign up to get a freebie, not because they like your content.
Learn what works for long sustainable rewarding results that will pay you over and over again.
