I discovered Affiliate Marketing one day in 2009 while I was at my day job. Yep, I was at a day job Googling ways to work at home. I did not like my job needless to say and my actions proved it. My IT Guy at the time told me to look up affiliate marketing! I was so excited at the possibilities! I started neglecting my work so much to pursue affiliate marketing that I actually got fired. LOL!
After going home and doing some research, I came across this 30 day challenge and ended up purchasing this “One Week Marketing Plan” by PotPieGirl, and I started blogging. At the time I was using free sites to do this. I used websites like Ezine, Squidoo, and Blogger. It didn’t take long before I started earning money.
By 2012, I earned oh so close to my first ever 6 figure year!! Easiest money ever!
One day, out of the blue, the sky fell Henny Penny! The Panda and Penguin Google updates were unleashed and I was squashed. From thousands a month to only hundreds overnight. Boom, gone!
The writers for these free sites were in a panic, a lot of writers rushed to move their content over to other free sites.
In a panic, and without thought like Henny Penny from Chicken Little, they went rushing around letting their friends know, “the sky was falling” and they should move their content to free sites too.
I didn’t follow because it didn’t make much sense to me. Instead, I took time to reflect on what was really going on..I took the time to understand what these Panda and Penguins were all about.
I came to the conclusion that moving to a free site again was going to produce the same results. I realized we as writers needed to step out of our comfort zones and build our own sites.
Free Sites Aren’t Relevant and Therefore Aren’t Ranked Anymore!
What I got from this Panda and Penguin thing was that these broad topic, free websites were not relevant. Google wasn’t ranking these sites at the top anymore because they were spammy and all over the place. 300-word articles about random topics stuffed with keywords just wasn’t going to work and that is what the majority of them were. That easy money is gone with the wind!
I knew I was going to have to build my own site and I was going to have to pick one topic and stick with it. That meant staying narrow and relevant to one topic that I was really good at. I already knew what that would be for me, you need to figure out what that is for you!
Those Google updates were all about relevancy and it was obvious to me. Free sites with a gazillion topics can’t be relevant. They are full of topics and a lot of half-ass writers we have no control over. A lot of the owners of these free sites are control freaks (yea, they really are), constantly changing the rules and making it hard for their writers who do a good job to make any money at all.
Why on earth would I follow suit and put myself in that same situation?
Nope, not me. I got off those free sites right after the fall, dusted myself off, put on my big girl panties on and built my own niche site on a topic I happened to very involved in. I never looked back. I’m doing MUCH BETTER these days too!
The way we blogged before was just not going to work anymore. We were not going to be able to just pick a topic like shower curtains and rank easily for it anymore and to think any different is just fooling yourself.
Websites with home decor, Halloween costumes, recipes and DIY crafts just can’t compete anymore with more narrow sites that are relevant to one topic. Why even torture yourself trying? Besides not ranking, you have to deal with a website “landlord” because you don’t even own the site.
Move forward. Dust the dirt off your keyboard and get out of the past!
Technology is Moving Forward With or Without YOU!
Technology is evolving at rapid speed. Just this week alone, as in overnight, the streets are full of people chasing these creatures around using their cell phones. Have you heard of Pokemon Go yet? Cell phones are replacing desk tops.
Don’t be a BlockBuster Video!
About the same time Panda and Penguin were unleashed on us, Blockbuster video took a dive. I am sure you remember them, don’t you? We now have Netflix! When Blockbuster died, people didn’t try to open up more video stores. It didn’t make sense. Video was out. Just like the way we used to write doesn’t work anymore.
FYI, Blockbuster elected not to buy Netflix. Where are they now? With Squidoo. DEAD.
Things have changed! Are you changing with them? It doesn’t hurt, I promise, it just feels a little uncomfortable at first.
Moving on is not always easy. We want to stay where it’s comfortable and we feel safe. Ah, but comfort is just an illusion and there is no safety there, it’s just keeping you stuck where you really don’t want to be.
You had a dream once! Reignite it!! Find it again!!
I hope that you find the courage to expand and build your own website where you can write freely and make money!
NOW IS THE TIME! Don’t waste another day writing on free sites like it’s 2010! You owe it to yourself to break free and make money online.
I did it. Lesley did it. Now it’s your turn! The way we used to do things doesn’t work anymore but it doesn’t mean that you can’t make it work for you!
